The Battle at St George’s Caye

Spain captured Mexico
And most of our friends
But some British pirates
Choose Belize as their end

A new life for them
No more sailing the sea
They discovered logwood
And mahogany

Spain found out
Belize has wood
So stop them they tried
But all for no good

Till 1779 when
Caught by surprise 
The settlement destroyed
Right before their eyes

Some were captured
Hundreds of Baymen fled
Years later they returned
Logging full speed ahead

In 1798
Spain attacked again
With thirty two ships
And twenty five hundred men

With only seven gun rafts to use
Five sailboats at that
The HMS Merlin
The Baymen fought back

Against all the odds
The Spanish did flee
The Baymen and slaves
Won the battle at St George’s Caye

So every September 10th
A party is planned
To remember and thank them
For saving this land
